Wuyuan
Wuyuan is known as “the most beautiful village in China” due to its quaint ancient village and charming idyllic scenery. It is located in Shangrao City in the northeast of Jiangxi Province, at the junction of the three provinces of Anhui, Zhejiang, and Jiangxi.
Wuyuan County has a history of more than 1,200 years. Its cultural customs, architecture, and food are part of Hui culture. The Hui-style buildings with white walls and black tiles add an antique texture to Wuyuan, so it is also praised as the “Museum of Ancient Architecture”. Whether it is the ancestral residence of Zhu Xi on Ziyang Ancient Street, Likeng surrounded by mountains, or the quiet Sixi Village and Yan Village, they are all excellent places to view the ancient buildings of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Every spring, the canola flowers in the mountains and plains are undoubtedly the most attractive thing in Wuyuan. Whenever the flower season comes, Wuyuan Huangling will welcome a large number of travelers and photographers.
Wuyuan in autumn will also be another lively season. The red leaves against the background of the quaint buildings bring Wuyuan a different kind of vitality before winter and once again draw photography lovers.
How to Get to Wuyuan?
Wuyuan can be easily reachable by bullet train, flight, or private vehicle.
By plane
There is no airport in Wuyuan, so if you choose to fly, consider the nearby Huangshan Airport, Jingdezhen Airport, or Shangrao Airport. At present, there are direct flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Chengdu, and other places.
After arrival, our private transfers can save you time looking for a taxi or the public buses, and avoid situations where staff does not speak English.
Following are the driving times from the airports to Wuyuan:
Jingdezhen Airport – Wuyuan: 86 km, 1hr
Huangshan Airport – Wuyuan: 87 km, 1h15
Shangrao Airport – Wuyuan: 143 km, 2h15
By high-speed train
If you choose to take the high-speed rail, we suggest that your Wuyuan trip can be combined with Huangshan (21 minutes journey), Wuyishan (1hr journey), and Hangzhou (2h30 journey), with a short driving time and a rich itinerary.
By private car
If your tour cannot be matched with scheduled trains or flights, the best way to get to Wuyuan is to take a private car. Our private driver and English-speaking guide will be a good helper in your journey.
No matter which transportation you take to Wuyuan, we highly recommend booking a private transfer when shuttling between local villages to prevent wasting a lot of time looking for a taxi or standing in bus queues.
When to Visit Wuyuan?
The best time for visiting Wuyuan is March-April, the flowering period of canola, and October-December, the season for viewing red leaves.
Wuyuan cuisine belongs to Anhui cuisine, one of the eight major cuisines in China, and it is good at braising, simmering, and steaming.
Hebao Hongliyu ( purse-shaped carp）
The red carp is a unique fish in Wuyuan and can be steamed or braised. The fish meat is fat but not greasy, fragrant but not fishy, with few fish bones, and the soup is fresh and tasty. It is a must-eat dish in Wuyuan.
Hu Doufu (paste tofu)
Almost all vegetables can be made into paste dishes in Wuyuan, the most famous of which is paste tofu.
Fenzhengrou (steamed flour-coated pork)
The villagers in Wuyuan like to use rice flour for steaming vegetables or meat (not starch, but coarse flour made from sun-dried and ground rice or glutinous rice). Steamed flour-coated pork is one of the most representative dishes. The steamed pork here is fatty but not greasy, with rich flavors.
